Optimising a site has changed over the years, but the basic principles are the same. You want a site that lists well on search engines and more recently, generative AI. Some questions to start with:

  • What content do you want you site to list for? In both AI and Google.
  • Locally or globally?
  • What social platforms do your users use?

These are a few questions for just about anybody wanting to optimise a site.

First, decide which search phrases you want to target, and then ensure that your site does well for these phrases by writing good content around them. Think what you would search for if you were looking for your products and services. Take a look at current google searches using Google's webmaster tools.

USE ONLY SAFE techniques to optimise your site, ones that will ensure you have a good relationship with all search engines. Over the years, Google have cut up heavily on sites that were using underhand techniques such as keyword stuffing and linking sites together. Personally, I always frowned upon this activity, and looks like I was proved right over the long run.

My suggestions are that you write good content, based around what your potential readers (and customers) need. Think carefully about the title and page layout; generally whaever's good for your readers is good for Google. Just make sure each page is relevant and correctly titled. Get the content onto social media make it easy for people to share with social buttons.
