Problems with missing DOCTYPE on internet explorer

When I upgraded this site a few weeks ago, I missed the DOCTYPE element accidentally from the top of the template.

So a site that should have rendered just fine in IE, suddenly rendered very, very badly.

If you suddenly find yourself struggling to answer why something does not render correctly in IE, and you're sure that it should - ensure a correctly formed doctype section appears at the top of the page!
