Updates to the site and the office server

I've just finished an update to the site, and as a result of it I have some new information to share. You should see some new articles turn up within the next couple of weeks based on what I've learnt.

I've made the site a little easier to navigate, and a lot easier for me to maintain.

Its been a busy last few weeks, testing the new site, lots to do at work and looking after both family and vegetable garden at home!

Power usage:

I've just looked at the power usage of my home/office server, and realised its almost out of reason! At 15 pence per unit it would cost me over 130UKP to run it for 1 year. Over two years thats the cost of more efficient components. On top of this cost, there is the more important issue of CO2 emissions! I cant believe a PC that isn't doing anything will burn more than 100W.

For those who want the hard facts (and for my PC these are conservative estimates):

Power usage in KW/h

100W / 1000W = .1 KW/h

KW/h in one day

.1 KW/h * 24 hours = 2.4 KW/h per day

KW/h in one year

2.4 KW/day * 365 days = 876 KW/year

Converted to cost

876KW/year * 0.15 UKP/KWh = 131.40 UKP per year

Needless to say, I'm going to look into efficient components!

I looked over the server usage again, and noticed that it was mainly being used as a file server. Therefore, easily replaced by a network disk.

Now its replaced with a time capsule that has the disk and networking together in one package. Should save significant amounts of power according to what I have read so far (~12W idle). As for the occasional Linux box, I can just use a virtual one as and when.
